This morning (May 8), the high-profile case of Shanghai garbage dumping Suzhou Taihu Lake was heard in Shanghai Gusu District People’s Court. The defendants Wang Juming and Lu Xiaodi were suspected of committing environmental pollution crimes, the defendant Sun Qiulin was suspected of fraud.
After examination by the procuratorial organ, it was found out that in January 2016, the defendant Sun Qiulin made up the fact that he could contract the landfill project in Taihu Lake, Jiangsu province within compulsory isolated detoxification center, and defrauded the defendant Wang Juming, brother Lu costs 250000 yuan. During the period from May to June, 2016, the defendants Wang Juming and Lu Xiaodi received domestic waste and construction waste from Shanghai without authorization, totaling 23336.3 tons, and dumped them into the drug rehabilitation center, another eight ships carrying garbage were not dumped because they were seized in time.
Xishan Island, where the crime was located, is within the national scenic area approved by the State Council and is also a national geological park. According to the assessment of Nanjing Institute of Environmental Science of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the main components of solid waste dumped by the defendants Wang Juming and Lu Xiaodi are domestic waste and construction waste, which are harmful substances and seriously pollute the environment, destroy the landscape and natural features. In order to prevent pollution expansion, eliminate pollution and make up for losses, relevant government departments at all levels in Suzhou have incurred a total cost of more than 850 million yuan. On February this year, the People’s Procuratorate of Gusu district brought a public prosecution to the People’s Court of Gusu district on suspicion of environmental pollution by the defendants Wang Juming and Lu Xiaodi. Due to the complexity and great influence of the case, the defendant Sun Qiulin was suspected of fraud, the trial time of this trial was arranged for the whole day of May 8 and half a day in the morning of May 9.
