The Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded, “Will Xi Jinping visit North Korea at the right time”

According to the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on May 10, spokesman Geng Shuang responded to questions such as whether President Xi Jinping would visit North Korea and the meeting between the United States and North Korea.

At the press conference that day, a reporter asked that the new president of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, said that he would visit North Korea at the right time. Will President Xi Jinping also visit North Korea at the right time? If so, what is the right time?

Geng Shuang said that China and North Korea are close neighbors and the two sides maintain normal exchanges and cooperation. The arrangement of visits between leaders depends on the convenience of both sides.

In addition, some reporters asked that there were reports that the US had told China that if North Korea stopped the nuclear test, it would arrange a meeting between the US and North Korea. Has the US ever communicated with China in this regard? What has China done to promote direct communication or multi-party talks between the United States and South Korea?

Geng Shuang responded that in recent times, we have answered similar questions many times. He made three explanations again:

First, China has always advocated the peaceful settlement of the nuclear issue on the peninsula through interlocution and negotiation, which is our consistent position. We have been keeping contact with all parties concerned, pushing all parties to strengthen communication and contact, and making joint efforts to push the nuclear issue on the peninsula back to the track of interlocution and negotiation.

Second, China has noticed the recent US statement on the nuclear issue on the peninsula and the positive information released in the statement that it is willing to peacefully resolve the nuclear issue on the peninsula through interlocution and negotiation. We believe that relevant parties have also noticed these statements and information and will take them seriously.

Thirdly, we have stressed many times that the United States and North Korea, as the main parties to the nuclear issue on the peninsula, should show sincerity to each other and gradually build mutual trust. It is hoped that both sides can work with China to make efforts to push the nuclear issue on the peninsula back to the right track through interlocution and negotiation and peaceful settlement.

Geng Shuang also said, “China has maintained close communication with all relevant parties on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue.”
