This weekend, the “Belt and Road” International Cooperation Summit Forum will open in Beijing. Volunteers from 28 universities in Beijing are ready. They will be full of enthusiasm, serious attitude, perfect posture and excellent service show the elegant demeanour of contemporary Chinese youth.

Selection expert interview English

According to the relevant person in charge of the Communist Youth League Committee, there are “three hundred percent” conditions for the selection of volunteers, namely: 100% are real-name registered volunteers, 100% have volunteer service experience in large-scale activities, and 100% are party members or league members. At the same time, volunteers come from 28 985, 211 and foreign affairs universities such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, National People’s Congress and Beijing Normal University, all of which have rich experience in organizing and participating in volunteer service in international large-scale competitions.

Volunteers are selected from the top schools and selected by experts such as volunteer service, English and the head of the employing department. They are selected from more than 10000 registered volunteers as the volunteer reserve of the Summit Forum.

On University of International Business and Economics, Lai Chengyang, the Youth League Committee, said that the school recruited and selected volunteers according to the quota index, requiring volunteers to participate in the election to be above the junior year and at least Level 6 in English, students with voluntary service experience in large-scale economic and trade activities and top ten volunteers on campus are preferred.

Wang Run (above) is the president of the University of International Business and economics student union. She has gone through two rounds of full English interviews between the college and the school. “The topic I drew was the most unforgettable volunteer experience. I heard from other students that their topics included China’s development opportunities under the background of the Belt and Road Initiative, how to understand the Belt and Road Initiative, etc, we should explain our views in fluent English.”

Training pays special attention to etiquette details

“If you don’t train, you can’t work. If you don’t pass the training, you can’t work.” According to this requirement, in late March, volunteers successively participated in general training, on-campus training and centralized training, and experts from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Academy of Social Sciences, the Central Party School, Beijing Etiquette Academy, the Red Cross and other units, it explained the basic knowledge, situation and safety, cultural etiquette, volunteer service emergency, post docking and other contents of the “Belt and Road” forum. At present, volunteers have completed at least 13 sessions and 52 class hours of training, and have achieved full coverage of knowledge training for voluntary service.

In etiquette training, “standing, sitting, walking, squatting, gestures and expressions” are all training contents. Wang Run said that the teacher would introduce the differences of etiquette and customs in different countries. “For example, it is not standard for volunteers to put their hands on the table in front of the information desk. They should be placed on their legs. If you sit, the girl should only sit one third of the seat.”

After learning etiquette knowledge, volunteers will practice in groups to compile the training content into a “script”. The two students play foreign guests and volunteers respectively. “We will design some links, for example, when foreign guests go to the hotel to check in, what should we do if the room card is dropped during the transfer process. Here, you may encounter the problem of bowing. Bowing is divided into three types: 15-degree bowing is used to express gratitude and 45-degree bowing is used to express sorry.”

The group translation volunteer Lian Li (right above) who studied Arabic said that gesture guidance is also very important, “in daily life, people say that you are used to pointing with your fingers when looking over there, this is very impolite to foreigners. You must use your palm to guide them. We should pay special attention to these small details and not leave a bad impression on foreign guests because of casual actions.”

Clothing tailored stand collar formal wear

Black fashionable fabrics, red cuffs with Chinese style, slim fit and cutting set off volunteers more upright and spiritual. The reporter learned that, learning from the volunteer clothing during the APEC meeting, the meeting uniformly tailored the standing collar formal dress for the volunteers, enhancing the sense of honor and responsibility of the volunteers and showing the good style of the volunteers.

“Before, there was a special person coming to the school to tailor every volunteer and attach great importance to the volunteers.” Wang Run said that when receiving the formal clothes, everyone saw that the lining of the clothes had their own names and schools. They were very excited and felt their responsibilities.

Prepare to share experience in WeChat group

Volunteer Chen Yuanhang (left in the above figure) told the reporter that the volunteers had done a lot of preparatory work before this “post. “We have a manual of more than 500 pages of service books, including the knowledge of the Belt and Road Initiative, etiquette image, etc. People often look around and strive to provide all services.” At the same time, University of International Business and economics also shared their experiences with outstanding volunteers who had volunteer service experience in large-scale activities through WeChat group.

Chen Yuanhang was assigned to the medical service team this time. “Our job is to be on standby at the medical site to assist medical personnel in dealing with emergencies. We have learned how to use stretchers, wheelchairs and other equipment.” In addition to pre-job training, volunteers in his position have carried out three full-day drills.

As the president of the student union, Wang Run said that she had organized many activities in the past, but her volunteer service experience in high-standard competitions and conferences was limited. During the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Wang run once regretted that he was a high school student and could not be a volunteer. When the APEC Beijing summit was held, the school recruited volunteers above the junior year, and Wang Run, who was a sophomore, missed it again. “It has been my dream for many years to be selected this time. I cherish this rare opportunity very much. As a small screw, I feel very honored to make some contributions to the country.”
